Weird Things Are Hard To Find
When we first hit upon our great pivotal idea for our documentary, we thought it would be easy to fulfill. How wrong we were!
The plan was to find an ‘object’ that our interviewee, Mike, had never seen before. We were hoping to find something really obscure that you would really know what it was, if someone told you. The idea was to see if Mike could figure out ‘how to make it do, what it’s meant to do’. This turned out turned out to be really hard!
We visited various shops, including the Dundee Recycling Centre. We were sure we would find something there that would meet our rather perculiar needs, but it wasn’t to be. The closest thing that we actually found was a Facial Spa. Something I had never personally come into contact before, but we decided that basing a Design Documentary around the fastcinating interactions one experiences with a vacuumed-formed kettle-for-the-face may not have been ‘meaty’ enough.
A re-evaluation was in order.
We came to the conclusion that the key behind film was to express the importance of Interactive Design in everyday products. We hoped that by looking at the old and ordinary we would see how an up-coming Interaction Design would use what they already know to intuitively interact with something they had never seen before. Due to the fact that we couldn’t find an item which we met the high requirements we had, we’ve decided that we want to look at how Mike looks at the design of old and new objects. We want to see if he thinks design is really being driven by perfection and user experience, or only what sells.
Hopefully he will be positive about the future of Interaction Design, but that will be for us to find out.
So all this leaves us in a very busy position. Lots of work to do this weekend, to make sure everything is perfect. If still got buckets of faith in this. It’s going to be good - i’m sure!
