The Introducion.
Hello and welcome to my journal.
Who am I?
My name is Finlay Craig and I am a first year Undergraduate student at the University of Dundee, studying Interactive Media Design BSc. (Also know as IMD).
Why are you in Dundee?
You know what, that is a very good question. I wish to answer it in video form. So please click the link below and hopefully the linked video shall answer any of your questions.
Why I am in Dundee YouTube Link.
The video takes you on the journey of the time which I spent studying Electronics & Electrical Engineering at the University of Edinburgh, and the people who have influenced my life.
What is Interactive Media Design?
Unfortunately I can’t really tell you what the ‘real’ meaning is because I really don’t know. I do however know what IMD means to me. IMD is about working with other people, to solve problems you couldn’t do on your own. IMD is about understanding the skills you might need to solve the problems that interest you. IMD is about designing, not making. It is about figuring out what is going on, and expressing that the best way possible.
So what is this journal all about?
This journal marks the beginning of the latest project which 1st Year IMD students are tackling. We are working on producing our own Design Documentary, with the hope of learning how effective film can be in researching, and express your ideas, and how film can be used to solve any form of design challenge.
Now for the ‘Finlay’ Mumbo-Jumbo.
I felt that this section would be an appropriate area to give you the reader, a ‘feeling’, if you will, for who I am.
I am a self proclaimed geek. I always have been, and I always will be. I’ve always been very outward with that - I think my friends at school noticed it the most when I began wearing festive lights on my school bag in the festive period. I am geek with everything I do. I’m an internet geek, I’m a technology geek, I’m a guitar geek, and the list goes on. What I would like to think of that though, is that I am deeply interested in a lot of ‘things’.
I came from a great family. My interest in design undoubtedly came from my father who has been a Graphic Designer his entire life. His passion and enthusiasm to something right the first time, every time, is something that has stayed with me in everything I do. In some ways I see this as a strength and a weakness. I get far too involved in projects which don’t really require the level of work I am putting into them, however I could not bear to hand over a piece of work that I wasn’t fully satisfied with. Between my time at the University of Edinburgh and University of Dundee I worked multiple jobs, but none more interesting than working at the Edinburgh International Conference Centre. At the EICC I found this same passion to deliver correctly, every time. I gained so much experience as a team leader there, I can definitely see that it is already helping my University work, especially in such a group intensive course like IMD.
I think that is about all you really need to know for now. So please check back for more updates regarding the Design Documentary, and the many other projects which I am currently working on in and out of University.
